IP Rating

The IP denomination refers to the International Standard IEC 60529 Degrees of Ingress Protection which establishes how protection rating is classified by enclosures against ingress of solids and liquids.

A two digit coding system is used:

IP-[X][X]

  • First digit: This defines the level of protection against the ingress of solids. This number ranges from 0 to 6, whereby 0 offers no protection at all and 6 is the maximum protection.
  • Second digit: This defines the level of protection against the ingress of liquids. This digit ranges from 0 to 8, where 0 offers no protection at all and 8 is sealed.

This system is internationally recognised and many products feature it on their marking.
