The IK rating is a code that indicates the mechanical protection to hidden impacts that could damage the integrity of the enclosure of a certain product. A standardised comparison between different electrical elements, materials and encapsulated items can be established.

A code ranging from 0 to 10 is established according to the level of mechanical protection, from minimum to maximum defined impact energy.

Test methods

The test basically consists of simulating impacts with a cylindrical hammer on the tested enclosure. The test methodology is defined by the code and establishes a set of parameters such as:

• Weight of the hammer
• Height of impact
